Last night was opening night for the show Women of the Wind.
I auditioned for the role in December, in the middle of the holiday season.
I had always wanted to do an extended run show at The Theater for the New City, and East Village institution. Over the years I've performed and rehearsed there, but never longer than for a couple of nights or for a festival. I've submitted and auditioned for several shows that were going up at the Theater, but nothing had broke my way.
One of the things that stands out for me about the audition is that the writer, Barbara Kahn, is a fan of TCM. At the audition we bonded over our love for old movies and ended up talking about the performances of Cary Grant and Claude Raines.
I won a part in the show, playing three different roles: Bob Trout, a classic radio newsman; Timothy J Lonergan, an extra in the movie Gone with the Wind; and one of the crew members for the filming of the screen tests.
Rehearsals began before Christmas. I was the new guy in a cast that except for one other actress had known and worked together before. They were immediately welcoming and I was greatly impressed with how quickly and determinedly they attacked the material.
I've greatly enjoyed working with the ensemble. Even if you feel you might not be the demographic for the show, please come give the play a chance. The show is a great mix of theater, history and old movies. I promise you the work is good. And seeing a show at a black box theater in the East Village is an experience you will never forget.
We have 11 more performances over the course of the month of February.
The information and description of the show is as follows:
